PREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE EMERGING 21ST CENTURY COMPETENCIES (E21CC) @ BMSS:
Overview of E21CC:
At Bukit Merah Secondary School (BMSS), we are committed to nurturing Emerging 21st Century Competencies (E21CC) in our students. These competencies equip Merahans with the skills, values, and dispositions needed to navigate the challenges of the future. Building upon the foundation of five social-emotional competencies (Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Management, and Responsible Decision-Making), our school is committed to fostering students to be confident, empathetic, and motivated lifelong learners.
The E21CC are categorized into three key domains, with each domain further detailed to identify the specific observable and actionable skills and dispositions that we aim for our students to demonstrate within the BMSS context.
-
Critical, Adaptive & Inventive Thinking (CAIT) - focuses on equipping students with the ability to analyze and evaluate information critically, apply knowledge flexibly in diverse and evolving contexts, and generate innovative solutions to problems. This domain encourages sound reasoning, strategic adaptability, and creative exploration to address challenges effectively.
-
Communication, Collaboration & Information Skills (CCI) - emphasizes the ability to convey ideas clearly across various modes, work respectfully with others to achieve shared goals, and critically evaluate and synthesize information from diverse sources. It also promotes ethical and responsible practices in using, sharing, and creating information.
-
Civic, Global & Cross-Cultural Literacy (CGC) – focuses on understanding national values and governance to contribute meaningfully to the community, thinking critically about global issues while engaging responsibly with diverse groups, and fostering sensitivity and appreciation for different social, cultural, and religious perspectives.
Learning Opportunities for E21CC Development:
BMSS adopts a holistic approach to E21CC development through our total curriculum. Students at BMSS engage in various platforms to develop E21CC, including:
-
Core Curriculum: E21CC development is integrated into our core academic subjects, and Character and Citizenship Education programmes.. This ensures that competency development occurs naturally within the context of subject mastery.
-
Co-Curriculum: Our extensive range of co-curricular activities, leadership development programmes and Values-in-Action projects provide practical platforms for students to apply and refine their 21st century competencies in real-world contexts.
-
Signature Student Development Experiences: Distinctive school events such as GROW Week, the Merahan Olympics, and our Global Merahan Programme create unique opportunities for students to demonstrate and develop their competencies through immersive, collaborative experiences.
-
Strategic Partnerships: We actively collaborate with community stakeholders, industry partners, and educational institutions to enhance our E21CC initiatives and provide students with authentic learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
