Direct School Admission
The DSA-Sec Exercise was introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2004 to promote holistic education and provide students an opportunity to demonstrate a more diverse range of achievements and talents in seeking admission to a secondary school. Under this DSA-Sec Exercise, participating schools will be able to select some Primary Six (P6) students for admission to Secondary One. The selection will be based on their achievements and talents before the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results are released.

STEM Programme – “Creative Robotics & Engineering” (Engineering and Innovation Club)
The Engineering and Innovation (E&I) Club of Bukit Merah Secondary School is a platform for students who exhibit flair and are keen in exploring in depth in the area of STEM. The E&I Club provides its students opportunities to challenge themselves in various competitions both locally as well as internationally, of which they had constantly out-performed themselves by emerging as winners. The club focuses on 3 sub-areas, namely Engineering, Robotics as well as Innovation & Design, where students will be exposed to different STEM areas, allowing them to make more informed decision when selecting their post-secondary options.

|Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools (IDEERS)
Application for DSA-Sec can be submitted through the online DSA-Sec Portal. The application is free-of-charge and will be open from 5 May 2022, 11am to 1 June 2022, 3pm.
Follow these steps to submit your child’s application:
- Log in to the DSA-Sec portal with your SingPass Two-Factor Authentication (SingPass 2FA). Find out how to register for a SingPass and 2FA if you don’t have one.
- You can indicate up to 3 choices and 3 talent areas.
- You may indicate up to 2 talent areas for the same secondary school. If you are keen to apply for 2 of the 4 talent areas offered by our school, you must indicate both talent areas as separate choices.
- You may provide information for up to 10 non-school based activities and achievements which are related to your child’s chosen talent areas.
- There is no need to submit any supporting documents during application. Your child’s primary school records (for example, P5 and P6 academic results, CCA, school-based activities, achievements or awards) will be automatically shared with the schools.
- Enter your contact details correctly. This allows the schools to contact you if your child is shortlisted for the selection process.
- You can update, withdraw and re-submit your application during the application period.
- If you are unable to apply online, approach your child’s primary school for assistance.
Important Things to Note before Applying
Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools’ academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.
Students who are successfully admitted to the school via DSA are expected to honour their commitment to the school, and participate in the activities related to the talent they are selected for from year 1-4.
Students who intend to apply for admission to our DSA (STEM) – Creative Robotics & Engineering should satisfy the following criteria:
|a. Member of Robotics, Innovation or STEM-related CCAs in primary school
b. Represented school at Inter-School STEM-related Competitions will be a bonus
c. Is proficient in at least one of the following:
|a. Introductory Interview
b. Written Aptitude Test
c. Hands-on Tasks

Students admitted through DSA exercise must remain in the Engineering and Innovation Club throughout his/her 4–5 years in the school.
a. Short-listed applicants are to report in their school uniform on 23 July 2022 (9.00am), at the foyer outside the General Office.
b. Short-listed applicants will go through the interview followed by the Aptitude Test and Hands-on activity.
c. Short-listed candidates will be notified by post by 12 September 2022.

Reflections of Ex-BMSS Students from Engineering & Innovation Club
|Muhammad Hakim Bin Zulfadli (2020)
One of the key highlights for me as a member of the Engineering and Innovation Club (E&I), was the privilege of being part of the team to participate in the Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools competition or IDEERS in short, which was held annually in Taiwan in September 2018 as well as 2019. Apart from the joy of emerging as the champions in 2019, I learnt a lot from the learning journey to various earthquake sites to witness and understand the devastation earthquakes could bring. More importantly, how good engineering design could help to mitigate these damages. I also had the chance to meet and interact with participants from around the world. These experiences made me realise the importance of teamwork and collaboration, where we could do so much more than doing it alone.

Going through the F1 in Schools competition was an enriching experience that deepened my understanding of many skills. The competition required us to learn things like how to design a car using CAD software as well as requiring us to apply knowledge about aerodynamics. We also learnt about social media, marketing and most importantly teamwork, where I formed strong friendships with my juniors and peers. During the competition, we learnt to overcome challenges like time management with effective teamwork and strong passion and managed to finish off strong. In the end, we designed and made a car and produced a portfolio that we could be proud of.

When I first joined Engineering & Innovation Club in 2017, I chose to join the toy design competition as I use to make toys in primary school. Along the way, my teammates and I had to overcome many challenges such as how to operate the different machines and use some tools that we had not seen before. However, with the help and guidance of our seniors and teachers, we were able to contribute greatly to our group and won the merit award in the competition. In conclusion, joining this toy design competition has taught me many skills and the most important skill I learnt is effective communication.
